the sketchbook project 2011

I signed up for my first 'Sketchbook Project' this year which is both exciting & stressful.  "Exciting" because I get to fill this bastard with fun, new illustrations / "Stressful" because I've got a lot of other projects going on & I'm hoping I can fill this bastard by the deadline (January 2011).  If I have to resort to fancy stick people performing strange acts to fill all the pages, then I gotta do what I gotta do.  

These sketchbooks will eventually take an awesome, rock tour around the country in the following cities: Brooklyn NY, Austin TX, San Francisco CA, Portland ME, Atlanta GA, Chicago IL, Washington DC, & Winter Park FL and like most rock musicians will be checked-out, manhandled, poked & judged by anyone willing to do so.  I hope you take the time to fondle my book if/when it comes to your city.  After the tour my little, well-traveled book of drawings will permanently reside at The Brooklyn Art Library available to anyone or anything to view.

My theme (which every sketchbook in this exhibit has) is "Help!", so we'll see where that takes me.  I'll be posting my illustrations here as I get through them.  Check back or follow me on Twitter to get them instantly.

Just got the word that a cookbook I did illustrations for a few months back is now ready for order from SunyPress.  This is a nonprofit endeavor, with all net profits being donated to regional food banks & charities all over the country.  You can check it out & purchase it here.

A terrible idea spawned from a spontaneous brainstorm session with some buddies.  Not sure if I want to see this one through though...

My nephew had his first day of school today.  I had to sketch something out to celebrate this.  Forgot to scan it to my computer, so took a lousy picture of it....

I had pieces on exhibit & for sale at the 'Mail Me Art: Medium Without a Message' show in London which ran from July 30th-August 5th. Definitely a cool concept which included some amazing illustrators/painters from all over the globe.

Darren Di Lieto is the man behind this idea & has just received the proof of the second volume of 'Mail Me Art' which will contain my illustrations. More info here.

David Choe is a bad ass.

Upper Playground had a little gathering of artists to create Choe inspired/related art.  This is mine:

Finished up a print for a quick show in New York coming up on June 20th.  I'll have about 10 pieces on exhibit with some of them for sale.  A percentage will benefit the Mockingbird Foundation (a non-profit organization which supports music education for children), so if you're in the New York area (Glen Falls to be exact), head over to 42 Degrees Gallery & show support.

I had the pleasure & privilege of meeting Alex Pardee & Dave Correia yesterday.  They're both on the 'Sketch 4 Sketch' tour (one of THE coolest ideas ever) & luckily it brought them here to Austin.  Here are my sketches I threw at them.

My version of "Rayola" for Color Ink Book.  This illustration was published in 'Color Ink Book: Vol. 8' along with artists Alex Pardee, Tom Haubrick, Andrew Bell, Chris Parks, Yamamoto Shigetomo, Jason Buchanan, Travis Lampe, Scott Wygmans, Jon MacNair & Femke Hiemstra.  Great company...

I've been featured in Color Ink Book.  This is an amazing, California-based publication which has contained some of my favorite artists, so it's exciting to be a part of it.   I'll have about ten pieces included in one of their upcoming issues...will keep you updated.  You can view an itsy-bitsy interview with me here.

Sketched up a quick design for some of the cats at The Blanton Museum of Art here in Austin.  A few of the museum's brave souls ran the Zooma 20k Relay a few weeks ago & they printed shirts for the occasion.  Great job ladies..

I've been neglecting my pocket moleskin lately, but opened it up last night & drew more zombies...of course I did.

It's been a while since I posted, but I've luckily been busy with a lot of different projects.  I'll share them with you soon enough.

Here are a few more "wrestling" illustrations I've done this week for my client in Ohio.  I'm starting to really dig adding digital color to my illustrations...something I'm still pretty new at.
